Opel has taken the redesign or the Meriva, which was known as mini-van and made it look a bit like a crossover SUV. The move could mean the death of mini vans or it could be a sign that car manufacturers are recognizing the drivers who want the space of the minivan but appreciate a higher style in the exterior design and interior design as well as better handling as far as powertrains are concerned. The updated model of the Meriva was launched in 2014 at the Brussels Motor Show. Since then the 2017 Opel Meriva has been treated as a concept car with many people wondering what Opel’s take of the compact SUV design would entail.
2017 Opel Meriva – Unique Feature
What has since come to light is that Opel has indeed abandoned the mini-van concept and that the 2017 Opel Meriva would be part of the manufacturer’s foray into the compact SUV segment. This means there would be lots of changes starting with the platform, which is expected to be made from a lighter material like Aluminum. The front will be slightly raised like that of the Mokka and the grille, front lights and taillights will be given a facelift to make them to look more sturdy, if not aggressive. The larger body might imply more space. The designers have incorporated the FlexSpace system that entails giving the care more usable cargo space by tilting the rear seats. The car also comes with standard doors, not the FlexDoor System that swung open towards the rear. This reduces the cost of manufacturing the car and will still make it affordable and attractive to its intended market.
The interior is expected to be comfortable and to have the best upholstery and finishes like a leather-covered steering wheel and gear knob it should have a center console with a touch screen control. The manufacturer’s Intellink multimedia system has been revised to provide quality sound. Connectivity has been a serious issue for most car manufacturers with people relying so much on their smart devices and so the Meriva is expected to provide connectivity in one form or another whether it be via Bluetooth or USB port.
2017 Opel Meriva – Engine Options
The 2017 Opel Meriva will come with two engine options. The first engine option will be a 1.4-liter petrol engine capable of producing 99 horsepower at 96 lb.ft. of torque. The second options will be a 1.7-liter Diesel engine that can produce 135 horsepower at 220 lb.ft of torque. If there would be a 1.7-liter petrol engine it would have the capacity to produce 136 hp. Information on such an engine existing is still unconfirmed. However what we do know is that all engines will be mated with a six-speed transmission. At best the car will be able to get from 0 to 100km/h in 9.0 seconds. The fuel consumption is expected to be no more than 4.5 liters per 100 km. The dimensions and the cost of this crossover SUV in Germany seem to support that rumor.
2017 Opel Meriva – Release Date and Price
The 2017 Opel Meriva is expected to be available at the beginning of 2017 but we might see the car being launched sooner in Europe. The price of the basic model is said to be $16,000.
